My 2AM Wakeup Call
I’m Tonya Leigh, founder of French Kiss Life where women live artfully and well.
It’s lovely to meet you.
I travel the globe working with ambitious women who want to live life with more elegance, style and joie de vivre.
However, it seems not that long ago, I was hiding: behind my weight, my family and my work.
I was living the the shadows of life instead of stepping up onto its stage.

On a cold winter night, as I was working the night shift as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit.
At around 2AM, we finally had time to sit down and take a break when one of the doctors turned to me and asked the question:
“So, Tonya, who do you want to be?”
I wasn’t sure how to respond.
So I gave the answer I thought was the acceptable answer.
“Um … a good wife, nurse and mom,”
I could tell by the confused look in his eyes that this was not what he was asking.
“No, I’m not talking about the roles you play in life. I want to know … ”
“Who do you want to be as a woman?”
After looking around for the hidden camera, I realized he was serious.
Talk about a 2AM wakeup call!
While I certainly wanted to be good at the things I’d rattled off, it was obvious I wasn’t clear on the “being” part of myself.
My essence.
What makes me unique.
The signature style of my soul.
How I wanted to be known.
My entire life up until that point had been about “doing” but “being?”
I wondered ...
Did I even have a choice in the matter?
I was who I was taught to be my entire life.
My thoughts were interrupted as our break ended.
(I had never been so happy to resume changing bedpans!)
But through the rest of my shift that night, I couldn’t shake his question.
The truth was, I didn’t have an answer.
I remember going to the bathroom later and looking at my overweight and overly tired reflection in the mirror.
Lifeless eyes stared back at me.
I had become a woman who was living out my days just going through the motions.

I was letting life happen to me instead of me happening to my life.

Because of how I was raised, It was NOT the answer I expected to hear.
Get a grip on yourself, I thought.
Everything in my “good Southern girl” mind fought the idea.
“No … that’s not me!”
“A girl like me can’t be that!”
“What will people think?”
“Don’t get too big for your britches.”
“Remember where you came from, girlie!”
But, when your soul answers the question, there’s no ignoring it!
And guess what?
That one word answer literally put the life back into my eyes and set me on a completely different trajectory.
It was the answer that eventually led me to French Kiss my life (even though I would never have imagined it at the time) and create a movement of over 100,000 women who are doing the same.
My answer took me on a remarkable journey of self-discovery which led me to accomplishing what I thought was impossible:
75 pounds overweight to permanently reaching my ideal weight with ease.
